May You Live in Interesting Times

According to a former history professor of mine, an ancient chinese philosopher coined that phrase as a curse upon his enemies. That being said, the past few days have been very interesting.

Let's start with the biggest news. My girlfriend and her mother had a tremendous fight a couple of days ago resulting with her being thrown out of the house. I wasn't aware of this fact until a friend of mine and myself came to the house the next day to help her move some gear to her new apartment. Turns out that she and her father had loaded up their family van when her mom went apeshit and started pulling stuff out saying that the majority of the shit was the family's and she didn't get to keep them. She even threatened to change the locks on her. Fortunately, it never came to that. We were able to come back the next morning and retrieve most of her belongings she was forced to leave behind. And it seems like my girl and her mom might be headed toward some kind of reconciliation. Let 's just hope this one keeps.

The job search is chugging along. I've been sending out resumes pretty steady for the past week, but I haven't landed any interviews. In the meantime, a friend of mine might be able to set me up with something. He was a little concerned about it being beneath me, but as long it is honest work and it puts a little coin in my pocket while I'm there, I got no problem with it. Any and all help is always appreciated.

Quiet Anticipation

I have two things I'm really looking forward to. First, my girlfriend is returning from her summerstock job in Illinois. I've been fortunate and have been able to visit her down there on a number of occassions, but nothing beats having her this close. Her contract officially ends in three days, but she may be able to wrap it early and be back as soon as tuesday.

I leave for Gen Con on Wednesday so it would be really cool if she made back to Racine before then. I miss her and I kinda feel bad for skipping town the weekend she gets back. She knows I'm going, but I still feel like I need to find a way to make it up to her.

Passed Over

Well, the Penzey job was a bust. Got the rejection letter in the mail yesterday. I don't get it! I was perfectly qualified for the job with the experience to boot, and I get passed over. To make matters worse, that rejection letter was accompanied by a friend sent from the Wisconsin Humane Society. According to them, even though my credentials were "very impressive" they have elected to pursue different candidates. Why am I so unemployable? I'm wondering if this is God's way of telling me to get the hell out of Milwaukee.

On a lighter note, I have a job interview scheduled for next week. Actually, I have to call tomorrow and see if I can schedule it for Tuesday before I leave for Gen Con. I have a bad habit of checking my weekend email on Sunday. The email requesting the interview was sent Friday, so I don't feel too bad. It's with another marketing firm, but I am a little leary of this one. I can't really put my finger on it this time, but let's just see how this plays out.

It's Go Time

I just spent the last hour sending cover letters and resumes out to potential employers. May they find me gainful employment.

So It Comes Down to This

It looks like I have till December until I have to move back to St. Louis. I got the word from my weekly chat with my grandmother. Apparently, my parents have set a December deadline for me to find gainful employment in the brew city. If I'm not employed by then I will be "forced to move back to St. Louis."

Let me say this first: I do not want to move back home! However, finacially it makes sense. I hate having my parents bail me out month after month. But the thought of limping back home with my tail between my legs just puts a big old nasty pit in my stomach! I've jumped on every employment opportunity that I've come across and all I've got to show so far is two interviews and a stack of "We'll keep your resume on file" letters as high as my knee.

But December is five months away. A lot can happen in that time. Maybe I'm stupidly optimistic, but this deadline is just more motivation for me. I'm not packing yet.

Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful

You Are Beauty
You are Beauty.

You are beautiful, whether it be on the inside, the
outside, or both. People are drawn to you as
strongly as you are drawn to the beauty in the
world around you.

Icy Hot is My Friend

I should really buy stock in the stuff. Last night class was really intense. The weapons portion of it was really cool. I learned the basic blocks and a couple of drills to help me practice them. I'm kinda worried about my makeshift staff. The rest of the class are using heavier ones than me and all the pounding has put several dents in mine already. It hasn't begun to break or splinter yet, but I don't want it to split on me in the middle of class. I think I'll bring it home after Saturday class so I can sand it down and maybe give it a couple of coats of lacquer. I don't think it will help with the denting or chipping, but at least it will make it look nicer.

The first half of the class involved getting our forms into tournament worthy shape. Now I'm not competing in any tournament soon, but it's always good to prepare. All of us appear to be doing really well, but there is still much work to be done. There are so many little details to hammer down that it was very hard to keep track of all of them. But, much like writing, God is in the details when it comes to forms competition. The encouraging thing is that I've got my forms down to the point that I can focus on the minor details. If I can get those taken care of, I'll be ready for competition.
